OVERVIEW
The Department of Optometry and Vision Science at NSHM Institute of Health Sciences (NCMT), Durgapur, delivers comprehensive undergraduate and postgraduate education in eye care, training the next generation of clinical optometrists and vision scientists.
The department offers the Bachelor of Optometry (B.Optom) and Master of Optometry (M.Optom) programmes with an emphasis on strong clinical skills, evidence-based practice, and community eye care. Academic training combines classroom learning with problem-based and case-based learning approaches to develop clinical decision-making, while extensive hands-on practice is provided through on-campus clinical facilities and structured internships/clinical rotations with reputed eye hospitals and vision centres. These practical partnerships bolster student exposure to refraction, contact lenses, pediatrics, low vision, and ocular disease management.
The department highlights experienced faculty and leadership in optometry education, research activities, and regular community outreach — including school vision screenings and eye camps — reinforcing its mission of preventive and accessible eye care for the region.
