| UKIERI (UK-India Education Research Initiative) full CPD award for NSHM College of Management & Technology, Durgapur |
The Optometry departments of NSHM College of Management & Technology & Anglia Ruskin University won a 3-year £50,000 project which is jointly funded by India and Britain under the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI).
The main project objectives of this project are to develop a collaborative Masters of Science in optometry & Applied Vision Sciences program for fresh optometrists/optometric educators and professionals in order to enhance and upgrade their knowledge, skills and ability and also to initiate research in the emerging areas of vision science and technology. This post-graduate program will produce professionals of a high standard in applied research, experienced in working with industry, who will become the base for the next generation of vision technologies and expansion of the industry. It also includes intensive research exchanges between the two institutions by NSHM and Anglia Ruskin University researchers.
NSHM College of Management & Technology in Durgapur under UKIERI shall be responding to the need for eye care in India and will strengthen international ties in optometry between the UK and India, to develop sustainable collaborative projects between the two institutions. The need for high quality eye care in India is great. The global initiative, Vision 2020: The Right to Sight, established by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness, recognizes that effective collaborations of organisations involved in a wide range of eye care and community healthcare activities is a potent tool to the elimination of avoidable blindness and impaired vision.
The initiative is lead by Dr John Siderov Head of Department from Anglia Ruskin University and Mr Soumendra N Ghosh, Head of Department from the NSHM College of Management & Technology. The Department of Optometry & Vision Science, NSHM College of Management & Technology is one of the best equipped for Optometry Education & Training in India and has one of the highest enrolments of students at the Bachelor’s programme level.
This joint agreement has the potential to lead to exciting new developments, including new postgraduate courses for optometrists and enhancements in the delivery of optometric education for students in both India and the UK. |

International student exchange program |

| To continue this partnership, Department of optometry & Vision science at NSHM & Department of Optometry & Ophthalmic Dispensing at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, UK have recently initiated a student exchange program where 4 optometry research students from the UK have completed a 2 week period of training in Durgapur hosted by NSHM . Both the departments plan to expand this programme with students from NSHM attending the UK for a similar exchange. |
