About Durgapur
Durgapur, the abode of NSHM Knowledge Campus , reflects the image of an
industrialized India. It is located in the district of Burdwan,
in the state of West Bengal, 168 km to the north of Kolkata.
Durgapur is a well-planned industrial city, on the banks of the
River Damodar, with a population of about 250,000.
It was founded in the late fifties, by the then Chief Minister
of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. Once called the Ruhr of
India because of its large scale industries , Durgapur ,today,
is fast becoming the country's leading education hub and the
preferred destination for students.
The Climate:
The climate of the city is tropical, pleasantly warm most of the
year. A comfortable winter, the coldest months being December
and January. Average minimum temperature is 7 degree Celsius and
the average maximum temperature varies between 42 degree Celsius
to 47 degree Celsius. Sometimes Nor'westor winds blow in the
afternoons in the month of April & May to cool off the heat.
Industries:
Durgapur has a whole gamut of manufacturing industries. It was
called the ‘Ruhr' of India because at one point of time it had
the highest concentration of big industries in India .
Popularly, it is known as a Steel City . Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP)
and Alloy Steel Plant (ASP) are the 2 biggest and the ones
around which the city and the other industries and ancillary
units came up. It was the first steel plant in India
manufacturing railway wheels.
Among the other major industries in Durgapur are : Durgapur
Projects Limited (DPL), Durgapur Chemicals Limited (DCL), Bharat
Ophthalmic Glass Limited (BOGL), Hindustan Fertilizer
Corporation (HFC), Phillips Carbon Black Limited (PCBL), ACC
Babcock Limited (ABL), Durgapur Thermal Power Station (DTPS)
Graphite India Limited(GIL) etc. BOGL is the only public sector
company in the country, which manufactures glass for
prescription lenses.
The post 1990's saw more of private capital backed industries in
Iron, Steel, Cement, Energy and Agriculture. Also, the service
industry has a major presence in form of Knowledge-Based
industries and Software Technology Park .
Lifestyle:
With its cosmopolitan lifestyle, Durgapur is thriving with
modern multiplexes, shopping plazas and food marts. Never before
has this city, which is so conveniently accessible by road and
by rail, been so welcoming and inviting as it is today.
What started out as an industrial hub is today a modern township
with multi-facility, multi-utility urban plazas, a confluence of
shopping, commerce, entertainment, education, recreation,
health, hospitality, medical amenities and premium residential
accommodation.
Organized Retail chains like ‘Big Bazaar’ as well as outlets
like Titan world, Himalaya Optics, Tanishq ,MP Jewellers ,
Nik-nish among others are all here.
The social infrastructure at Durgapur is buzzing with activity.
The latest on the anvil is the ultra-modern, ultra-large
educational project called ‘IQ City’. Stay Tuned.
Rich in history with a diverse economy, a thriving cultural
heritage and a forward looking cosmopolitan attitude, Durgapur
is a city of national and regional importance
